The 3 Step Routine That Saved My Skin

I have mentioned before that I had the worst skin for about ten years of my life, yes, ten! I looked like a ladybug on a daily basis, my skin was my biggest insecurity until about a year ago. I have finally developed a skincare ritual that not only cleared my skin, but it is also maintaining it, and it doesn’t break the budget, something that has been very important to me and I’m sure it is for you as well.

I have done tons of research when it comes to types of skin, causes of acne, redness, hyperpigmentation, sensitivity, you name it, I probably have some kind of knowledge about it. I have tried TONS of products, whether it was Proactiv, Cetaphil, Clean and Clear, I tried it all. Nothing seemed to work. Although I was very informed when it comes to skin, I had a lot of trouble pointing out why I was suffering from acne even after changing my diet completely, hydrating my body, and managing my stress levels. I was doing everything I could, right?

Wrong.

The answer dawned on me when I observed my other friends with clear skin and their habits. They have had the same skincare routine for months if not years, and every time they had an acne flare up, it seemed to disappear on its own within days. THAT was my problem, consistency. I never fully committed to a product, once I noticed that I was breaking out, I immediately blamed the cleanser, moisturizer or spot treatment for it, threw it in the trash and searched for something new, this was my downfall. For someone so informed, how could I have been so naive?

I decided to amp up my research and try a consistent skincare routine for at least a month, and at last, my skin decided to thank me and clear up. I assumed it was a coincidence, but I kept up the routine, through my bad eating binges (I do not recommend that if you are actively trying to clear up your skin), through my nights of not washing my face after partying a little too hard (also a big no-no), my skin remained loyally clear. And then it dawned on me! I did it, I finally found something that works for me!

This wasn’t a miracle, I still broke out around that time of the month or periods of intense stress, but my acne did not persist as long as it usually does and it didn’t scar, it also returned to its clear state after the break out passed. It is a simple 3 step routine, with an optional addition of a serum that has completely transformed the way I look and feel. Here it is:

Step 1: Cleanser La Roche-Posay Effaclar Gel Cleanser

This cleanser is advertised as one for oily skin, however, mine is combination and it works great! It is formulated with zinc pidolate, and for anyone who has struggled with acne, zinc is great for clearing up your skin. It doesn’t over dry the skin, it doesn’t throw the pH off balance and it has been tested on sensitive and acne-prone skin. It cleans the oil and dirt without leaving you with a feeling of a tight and dry skin. I have been using it for a year now and I have yet to find anything better than this cleanser. It is a very respectable brand, can be found at Ulta or Target, however, from my experience Amazon always has better prices.

The trick that I learned from an aesthetician is that you should always wash your face for a minute, just with your fingers, and that is what I have been doing. I turn off the water after wetting my face, use a tiny bit of the cleanser as a little goes a long way, and work it into my skin for a minute. What that does, is ensures that every part of your face is thoroughly washed, and it allows the ingredients found in the cleanser to have enough time on the skin to actually do what they are supposed to do,  rather than being washed off in 10 seconds. Try it out!

 

Step 2: Toner-  Thayers Witch Hazel (Aloe Vera Formula)

I am sure everyone has heard of witch hazel and how incredible it is for the skin, especially acne prone. Here are some benefits of witch hazel for skin:

  • Reduces Inflammation
  • Reduces Redness
  • Natural Astringent
  • Reduces the look of pores
  • Tightens Skin

There are many more benefits to witch hazel, it has been used for centuries and it is probably the most natural solution. When dealing with acne, our skin is already irritated enough, it is in our best interest to try to soothe it. Soothed skin appears less red and the acne doesn’t look as angry as it would if we were to use a drying toner. Thayers Witch Hazel is my favorite due to the aloe vera formula, which is another great ingredient for anyone struggling with skin irritation and acne.

 

Step 3- Moisturizer- Andalou Naturals Face Cream

We are all aware of how necessary probiotics are not only for our gut health but also for our skin health. A balanced diet itself will not do the trick unless we restore our gut flora. Well, this cream is a two in one! It’s like a BOGO deal but for your skin. I have been using it religiously morning and night for the last year and it has created incredible results. It also contains Vitamin C which is essential for brightening those dark spots after a breakout and it makes your skin glowy and healthy. I have been in love with this brand and the rest of their products as well. Their Vitamin C Serum has also become a staple in my routine as of the last 2-3 months and although it didn’t make as drastic of a difference as the last 3 products did, it brightened up my scars even more and my skin feels healthy again.

Amazon usually has really good sales on this brand in comparison to Ulta and other natural beauty websites so I recommend looking there first. Also Amazons great return policy allows you to test out this product and if it doesn’t work you can always return it, but I can almost guarantee you that you will love it.

 

Well, that is it for my skincare routine, it’s very simple, clean, and good for the skin! Remember, consistency is key, something that it took years for me to learn, don’t let the same be the reason that you are not looking or feeling your best. All of these items are affordable skincare products without the bad ingredients you would find in other brands. If you are on a budget, Amazon does have the items not only cheaper but also available in smaller sizes than most stores do so you can test them out yourself.
